Over the Phone Interpretation

When using an interpretation service, it can sometimes be difficult to let the client know over the phone that you are connecting them with their interpreter so that the call may continue.  To avoid frustration and save time for both parties we have interpreted, “Please hold while we connect with an interpreter,” in the following 12 languages.

People often use “interpreter” and “translator” interchangeably. However there is a key difference between the two; an interpreter interprets words that are being spoken by expressing the idea orally in another language. Translators on the other hand work with words that are written by conveying ideas by writing them in another language.

Equally important to understand is that there are two types of interpretation: consecutive and simultaneous.

The Over the phone interpretation is consecutive. In consecutive interpretation, the first person will speak a sentence or two and will pause. The next person to speak will be the interpreter who will express the ideas and meaning of what the first speaker just said. This will not necessarily be a word for word match but interpreters attempt to keep the word choice as close as possible to the original but still follow the rules of the target language. The conversation will continue to be broken up into chunks, pausing so the interpreter may convey the message.

Simultaneous interpretation is when the interpreter is sitting in a booth with headphones and a microphone. As the speaker talks the interpreter will covey the message speaking into the microphone that then feeds into the earpieces of audience members. Simultaneous interpretation is usually used for large meetings.
